Variables to control
- Film thickness — thin applications lose water faster than thick passages.
- Surface absorbency — absorbent supports shorten working time by pulling water from the film.
- Air movement and temperature — both can shorten the practical blending window.
- Binder concentration — heavy dilution changes how much acrylic binder remains in the mixture.
A practical workflow
- Compare one color as a direct stroke, a medium-extended glaze and a water-diluted wash.
- Watch the surface change from glossy-wet to tacky to fully dry.
- Repaint across the dried swatches and note which lower layers reactivate and which do not.
- Record sheen, color shift and edge character after full drying.
Common failure modes
- Trying to blend after the paint has entered the tacky stage can create drag and uneven texture.
- Judging only the wet color can mislead you when value or sheen changes during drying.
- Assuming every support dries at the same speed hides the role of absorbency.
Controlled exercise
Paint the same 5 cm square on acrylic paper, primed canvas and a sealed panel using the same mixture. Time how long each remains comfortably blendable, then compare the dry films.
